Tackling The Clutter, Homeschool Style

Homeschool families are at a disadvantage when it comes to getting organized. Having children at home – and even mom at home – all day adds to the mess tenfold. Just imagine: three meals a day in the house, all of the school papers and projects spread out on the floors and tables, book cases and cabinets full of educational supplies, and chores that get neglected because of other, more important learning experiences. Add these all up and you have a colossal mess: a daily challenge to overcome that tends to overwhelm even the most dedicated of organizing mamas!

You can ‘tread water’ by just tackling the urgent – laundry, dishes, floors, paperwork… but if you ever plan to get ahead, you have to create your own system – and then devote your entire family to keeping it. Everyone will have their own system – based on what works for your family. Each of us is different: different amounts of children, different types of stored things, different amounts of times in the home, etc. No matter how different all of us are, though – one thing is the same for everyone (homeschooling or not): clutter.

The first part of getting organized is getting rid of clutter. Clutter can be anything that is in the WRONG place, or things that don’t really need to be in your home any more because they aren’t being used. We all have our fair share of those types of things because for the most part, things just keep multiplying. The longer you live in one place, the more you accumulate. There are easier ways to learn to purge unneeded things than moving. It takes time, but it is so worth the effort when you can remove the mental weight of all that clutter off of your back. Clutter stresses people out. Having a place for everything and an organized system that works for YOU will give you peace of mind.

Here are some ideas to get rid of the junk and organize the things that stay:

1. Use the 3 Box System: “Keep”, “Donate”, “Trash”

Have your family pick a room together to tackle on a weekend. Just like many of the Home Improvement Television shows instruct their participating home owners to do, set out a set of boxes and start going through the closet, drawers, corners, shelves, and crannies – emptying the room down to it’s core. It’s amazing how much you will begin to ENJOY getting rid of things when you see progress. If you have more than one person doing all the work, you’ll tend to stick with the project until it is done. Better yet – enlist a third party that isn’t as sentimental as you are (someone who hates clutter and keeps a clean house is preferrable). Watch your home begin to slowly morph into an organized haven, one weekend at a a time!

2. Move things UP

Clean floors can give the illusion of a clean space – even if you have your shelves packed and your room busy with furniture. Have a rule in your home that children (and parents – remember to set the good example) can’t create floor piles. It’s tempting to just set things aside to tackle later, but stick to your guns. Utilize upward spaces… such as the wall (hang a floating shelf if you don’t have one to use) or even the ceiling (hang a stuffed animal hammock). Put things in stackable boxes in the top shelf of your closet – ones that are easy to get down and work with so your “to-do piles” can remain tucked away out of sight until you have time to work on them.

3. Light it on Fire

School projects are fun, but it isn’t realistic to keep every single toilet paper animal, macaroni necklace, overly large construction paper glitter painting, or towering clay volcano. The children might balk at the idea at first, but let them start a project scrapbook and PHOTOGRAPH these items. Make them write a paragraph or two about the fun they had making them. Then set a date to have a bonfire! Goodbye clutter, hello sneaky writing assignment!

4. Meet a Need

Freecycle and Craig’s List are great ways to give back to others in need and keep the landfill from growing. People (especially in today’s economic times) are looking for gently used items on both of these great websites. Join either one to get rid of your stuff. Craig’s List is a selling site like Ebay that charges no fee to list your items. Freecycle is a FREEBIES only sight and you are allowed to give requests for needed items as well as give your things away. I have a special place in my heart for Freecycle. There was one year that I was supplied with a Christmas tree and an entire set of pots and pans by giving Freecyclers. I have even seen people giving away LAND on Freecycle. Someone else’s junk might just be your treasure. Just be sure to give away more than you bring home!

5. Thin out your drawers.

Keep only what you need. This is hard for women in the closet department… but before you start figuring out what wardrobe items to give away, tackle the areas where it is easiest. Do you need 10 kitchen skillets? 25 serving spoons? 30 boxes of dental floss? 13 boxes of primary color crayons? Start small and begin to fill a box of ‘Extras’. Before you know it, you’ll be able to donate to Good Will or list things on Freecycle. Keep reminding yourself that the less you have, the less you have to keep up with. Liberate your time by limiting your responsibilities to ‘things’.

I’d love to hear your organizing ideas. Leave me a note in the comment section and let me know what things have helped you to keep your homeschool house functioning with ease. It is an endless battle, but one we can’t afford to lose if we want to keep our sanity.

Relevant Aftermath...

Relevant necklace

Relevant 2010 has left me speechless. I've had a bout of digital laryngitis. [Sorry about the silence in here.]

Relevant10 conference
*Photo by Beth at Brew Crew Adventures (click to enter her photo stream at Flickr)

The Relevant Conference was the most amazing gathering of like-minded Christian women and God-breathed messages to process that I could have ever imagined. I intended to go to a blog conference, but my heart, mind and soul were forever altered by the people and the words - the Spirit manifest in that place. [I have chills typing this. There are no words.]

some post authors with Sally Clarkson

I have been getting a few emails asking if we are...

1. alive
2. ok
3. going to ever get around to the reviews that were promised

Rest assured, the answer is yes to all of the above. [We are better than OK, actually - which is what happens when God works on your heart.]

traffic

I'll give you a brief update on our little Bee family and share with you a few photos (because I can't NOT share photos). Hopefully your mind will be put at ease if you've been scratching your head about the week-long absence in here. I did have draft guest posts scheduled, but I couldn't even find enough time to get THOSE published in the past few days... and any blog time I have mustered has gone to the Homeschool Post (which is in its busiest season of the year right now - only ONE more day of nominations and then voting in November for the Homeschool Blog Awards).

Relevant10 driving crew

The road trip was memorable (in some ways wonderful, in other ways extremely stressful... and if you've ever taken a 3500+ mile trip in a moving vehicle for 11 days with 4 big people and one 19 month old baby, you'll understand). DC was over-the-top (too much to see and do to ever feel like we accomplished much, but certainly worth the trip - again, not a place I'd ever go back to with a child under 3).

iphone Bee

My daughter - still in undiagnosed back pain - didn't get all her physical therapy 'homework' exercises in during our journey... and has had a few bad days back at home. Her physical therapy training continues. I'm convinced she's just going through a growth thing (I could almost 'SEE' her grow on this trip - I bet she's a half an inch taller since last month). Even though tests show nothing conclusive is wrong, she's convinced she's dying and has the melodrama to prove it. Her big brother is near mental breakdown over having to pick up extra chores - which has strained their relationship and made getting homeschooling done even more difficult than it was before. My prayers are hovering over this area... her pain and their relationship... both of their attitudes and my stress level as I look at the lesson planner in anguish...

crazy

I had a few OBGYN concerns that the doctor laid to rest today at my 25 week visit. I look more like a watermelon than a human. Thankfully this baby is lower than the last one, so I can at least breathe and eat without severe heartburn. Even when you can hardly get up the stairs, there are things to praise the Lord for. Looking for my 'silver lining' in every cloud. Not sure how I'll make it to February... but God is already there.

rear-view me

The unpacking is almost complete. The suitcases finally made it to the garage today and the laundry is in various stages depending on what room you pass through. As busy as we have been with early voting, physical therapy and OBGYN appointments, paying bills that were overdue from the past payday that fell during our trip, etc... we have not had time to get the house spic and span or get back to school yet. I'm giving myself a 'get out of guilt free' card and remembering Ann Voskamp's very 'relevant' message: "The state of my space does NOT reflect the state of my soul."

me and Beth with Marshie

As much as I would like to curl up into an introspective little ball and just simmer on all the input I have received over the past week or two, the show must go on. Dinner needs cooking, groceries need gathering, and a lot of people are waiting for voting pages to pop up on the Homeschool Post next week. I hope you'll know that I'm 'here' even if I'm not posting as regular as I usually do.

I'll be putting out the 'urgent fires'. Doing the 'next BEST thing'. Tending to the needs of my family.

First things must come first.

Ann Voskamp's new book '1,000 Gifts'

Ann Voskamp talked about her post she wrote about the mama duck as a closing statement at Relevant. Mama ducks don't line their feathers with scraps of feathers that are already lying on the ground. Those feathers are hard and cold. She takes the softest, warmest feathers from her chest and plucks them out one-by-one to make a nest for her little ones... she gives of herself. If you haven't read this post, click over to the Post and read it. It is one of my very favorites that Ann has ever written. I knew it instantly when she began to read it from the podium at the Harrisburg Sheraton. My minds eye envisioned the artwork she had included with her post ... my heart felt the sting of plucked feathers past and the guilt of having many times gathered a handful of leftovers for my family because I was 'too busy' doing 'good things' for others.

Ann Voskamp

She asked us to silently pray and ask God to reveal to us what we must change so that we can live in the 'Upside Down Kingdom' of Christ-followers... women sold out for Him.

God's message was as clear as a blue Texas sky in June:

First pluck of yourself before you pluck your keyboard, Heather.

So this is what I intend to do. I have no idea how or what that might look like in the long run... but for now, I'm counting my blessings and trusting that God will change the very face of my marriage, my homeschooling, my life and my blog/s.

Wonderful Grace

His vision is always better than mine. I'm so looking forward to seeing it unfold.

Beyond Survival: Practical Answers

I've too often been in the overwhelm. I've read book after book. Post after post. I've heard the advice to pray. Yet, in the thick of dancing toddlers, a needy newborn and a challenging teen, how is meaningful prayer time supposed to happen?

See, I need practical. How do I put this great advice I've gleaned into practice for my family? How does it translate to the day to day chaos?

Let’s admit it. Homeschool families sometimes need strategies. Spending all that time together. In our family, we are blessed with five children from preschool to middle school. The needs are as far-ranging as the age span. So how are homeschool parents supposed to handle it all?

The following are the practical answers I turn to. The advice and wisdom turned reality. Some involve time investment up front for long term results. Some are just the quick fix. Right at home. Right now.

Back to Basics - Living Water, Food and Rest

Save Your Sanity - The Homeschool Day
  • What About the Little Ones? The answer to the question I get most often. During school, mom really can be in two places at once.
  • The Lunch Lady – tummies are growling after a full morning of school. But you still have your lunch lady job. Here’s a few easy solutions.
  • Quiet Time – Just a bit of time apart. What the children and I do after school in the afternoon
  • Just Take a Nap – I always put the little ones down for a nap when they are cranky. Sometimes, Mama should take just a 10 minute nap and get over her crankiness too.
  • Coffee Break – a recipe for a short, afternoon coffee break (with ideas for the children too)
  • Celebrate Every Day or Mad, Sad, Glad - supper time traditions
  • Dance with the Dishes - making clearing the table fun
  • Just Step Outside – after feeding the crew supper, after a long day teaching and balancing the chaos. Just step out through the front door, walk around the house and come back in the back door refreshed. It really does make a difference.
  • More Simple Schooling Strategies

Cultivate Relationships
  • Dating Your Husband – free, practical and low cost ideas for date nights
  • Big Six Great Dates - "MarriedLife is a ministry for married couples. Our desire is to help you experience the fullest and healthiest marriage possible."
  • 48 hrs - A yearly, twice-yearly or even quarterly house swap idea for a get-away or anniversary – using gift cards and just going out to eat for $25 or less.
  • Sibling Sleepovers –  cultivate sibling relationships (and pssst – mom and dad get a date night at home too.)
  • Practical Communication - practical ideas for parent/child relationships

Simplify Annual Events

Give Thanks - Always

Give thanks, count giftsthe Habit of Family Journaling, inspired by Holy Experience's Journaling as a Spiritual Discipline: Writing and Family Worship

Tricia homeschools five children from preschool to middle school, mixing up a classical and Charlotte Mason style. You can find her facing that daily dose of chaos at Hodgepodge. An update from the Relevant 2010 road warriors...

Just thought I'd drop a line and tell you all that the trip has been great so far. Here's what we've been up to:

Day 1: We stopped in Little Rock and spent the night with friends that we used to homeschool with there while we lived there. It was so great to see them.

Day 2: We drove to Eastern Tennessee and spent the night in a hotel close to the Smoky Mountain National Park. It was too late to do much but eat dinner (Cracker Barrel tasted wonderful after sandwiches in the car two days in a row, but it couldn't beat Teresa's delicious ROAST the night before). [Seriously, it was the best roast I've ever eaten... I must have your secret, Teresa!]

Day 3: We drove in to the park and enjoyed the colors of fall... the lovely peaks of the smokies... the cool air. We ate lunch at Chick-Fil-A before heading to DC that night. It was a loooong drive and we got in really late. Sleeping with the baby between us on a full sized bed makes for a pretty sleepless night, too - so this morning on Day 4, we started out TIRED.

Day 4: We visited the Capitol Building, the Air and Space Museum, and the Library of Congress. We barely scratched the surface of these places because of the enormity of them, the fact that we weren't rested up properly, and because the baby was a grump. We had to sneak him some apple juice inside the Capitol bldg. where they don't even allow you to take in sealed bottled water or snacks unless you have an infant and they remain in your daiper bag (shhhh!). He finally fell asleep in the stroller before we headed back to the parking garage - and tonight he was asleep before 9PM for a change. [I forgot the camera, so I'm hoping some of my 13 year old's photos come out for a later post... or else I'll have to resort to the iPhone pix I shared on twitter and facebook. I'll have to admit that it is much easier to carry an iPhone around on a long - mostly uphill - walking tour of DC than it is to carry a heavy camera bag and a DSLR, though... so I'm only half-way sorry. I found out why they call it Capitol HILL today.]

The photos in the above collage are mostly from when Chevy dropped off the vehicle and our drive through the Smokies. The 'Speed Limit Enforced by Aircraft' sign is from Virginia. [I had never even heard of aircraft-enforced speed limits and our snarky family came up with some hilarous scenarios between auto and aircraft while we drove along through the Virginia hills.] The photos of the outside of the vehicle were taken in Arkansas. We've been through 4 states so far - TX, AR, TN, VA... and our fifth comes this Thursday when we arrive in PA. The jury is still out on whether we'll come home by way of West Virginia or not... I guess it all depends on how we feel about adding a little bit of time to the return trip - which will not be as relaxed or slow since we'll be splitting the drive back in HALF rather than THIRDS (ouch!).

You can follow along with the Relevant road trip by checking out these hashtags on twitter: #Relevant10 and #sweetRIDEChevy. I'm tweeting about the little details we find interesting on the trip as we tootle along. Tomorrow we'll be seeing more of the free sites in DC. You can check out my tweet stream and facebook page for pictures and travel notes.

Are You a LAZY Mama?

mama and baby on couch tired

I’m a lazy mama.

Now in my defense, I had just given birth to another sweet little baby a few weeks earlier (she’s our seventh!).  I deserved that nap.

But that’s not the kind of lazy I’m talking about.

I don’t sit around watching TV during the day eating Doritos.  I don’t sleep in till 10:00 every morning while my kids watch cartoons.  And I definitely don’t eat bon-bons while my maid does every bit of housework for me.

Think of a different form of lazy.   It’s important because you may quite possibly be a lazy mama too.

A lazy mama takes the easy way out when it comes to training her children.

A lazy mama says, “Oh, he’s just going through a stage – he’s usually such a sweet boy.”  But a purposeful mama says, “This behavior may be temporary, but regardless, I need to train him to do what’s right.”   Because a purposeful mama knows a slightly naughty stage in a little child turns into a really big, nasty, rebellious stage in an older child.

She’s just tired today,” sighs the lazy mama when her child throws a tantrum.  But a purposeful mama knows that her little one needs to learn to have a pleasant smile and spirit even when she doesn’t feel her best.  Then she makes a point of giving her child a nap on a regular basis and never giving into foolishness.

Stop fighting!” the lazy mama yells.  But a purposeful mama takes the time to talk with her children about who was at fault and to gently train them that selfishness is at the root of nearly all fighting and bickering.

The lazy mama makes excuses for her child (commonly known as a “brat” by others).  She may say, “He’s so strong-willed!”  But when the purposeful mama realizes that the Lord has given her a particularly stubborn child, she determines to work even harder at training him to obey.  And she frequently prays that her hard-headed child will get his will under the control of the Holy Spirit.

The lazy mama gives her children many chances to do what she says.  “Maybe he didn’t hear me the first time; maybe he didn’t understand my command.”  Yet the purposeful mama knows when the child is taught first-time obedience, everyone benefits.

I can be such a lazy mama.  It’s so much easier to ignore character issues in my children’s lives -- hoping they’ll improve, hoping they’ll grow out of that stage, hoping I can just get my own things done while their foolish behavior corrects itself.

But it doesn’t work.  In fact, the lazier I am, the worse things get around the house.  Children fight more, they have worse attitudes, I punish out of frustration and exasperation, and their hearts are turned farther from being sensitive to the Word and to the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

When I am purposeful in my training, children obey cheerfully, they show love to their parents and to each other, and the parents can lovingly discipline in a manner that is pleasing to Christ.

Don’t be a lazy mama – be a purposeful mama.  Your family will thank you for it.

“Oh, that my ways may be established to keep Thy commands, then I will not be ashamed when I look upon all Thy laws.”  Psalm 119:5,6

Tell me today – do you find yourself falling into the trap of being a lazy mama?

The Homeschool Blog Awards are Now Accepting Nominations!

homeschool blog awards 2010

It's been crazy for me and my bee hive with the Homeschool Blog Awards AND the Relevant Blog Conference happening in the same month. I just wanted you all to know that the awards are now open and you can click this large, juicy button and see how you can nominate your favorite homeschool-related blogs. There are 20 different categories and a multitude of snazzy prizes for the winners.

I also posted the A B See photo meme yesterday over there. Shutterfly is giving away 50 free personalized greeting cards to the October winning photographer. We're starting week 5, but you can start your alphabetical themed photos at any time... it isn't too late to join in the fun. I'll let you know a little secret: for the last few weeks there have only been between 7-10 photos for me to pick from... so the chances of winning the prizes are really HIGH for a give-away photo meme! Not only can you win prizes and get some recognition for your photo talent if your picture is chosen to display... but you can enjoy the meme as a photo homeschool project with your kids and learn to take pictures together. If your kids are really young, you can use the assignments (a...b...c...d...) to create a photo book that teaches little ones their alphabet! It really is a fun meme.

Lots of things going on over there this month - and then voting in November. Add the Post to your list of daily digest of homeschool blogs (follow their RSS/feed or sign up for emails so you don't miss a thing).

Sweet RIDE Chevy ~ An introduction to the Relevant 2010 Road Warrior

That's NOT my driveway. I wish.

However... the vehicle there - shown in silver - REALLY DOES look that good. The one they brought me has this magnificent pearl white metallic coat ("White Diamond Tricoat"). Oh, my dear it is fabulous looking.  Looks better than the photo above when you see it in person, actually - and it makes my driveway look pretty nice (even without the picture perfect mountain range and foaming white-capped waves).

I love it that when the nice GM fleet guys DROVE ALL THE WAY FROM DALLAS to deliver my vehicle, they showed up at 9am and I was still in my sweat pants... without make-up... eating breakfast after frantically cleaning the house so they could come in and drink coffee. I mean, what else besides a cup of coffee is enough to thank someone for dropping off a fully loaded, brand new Chevy so you can drive it for two weeks FOR FREE?

Guess what? They didn't come in. They have no idea how sparkly my house was (which only lasted about 30 minutes). So much for putting the house before your own hygiene. Mental note taken! I'm sure they were wondering why the GM Texas PR lady picked a frumpy, unkempt, pregnant housewife to get a two week lease with their prize 2011 crossover. In fact, I find myself wondering that sometimes, too.

But hey - frump or no frump, we all gotta get around town, right?

Some in more style than others apparently... just look at that dash. Zing! Gorgeous. No wood-grain needed.

My #sweetRIDEChevy (twitter hashtag) for the Relevant 2011 'field trip' is the all-new 2011 Chevy Traverse LTZ. LTZ as in Loaded/Totallyawesome/Zoooom! Talk about torque! I double dog dare you to click over to the Traverse landing page and check out their 48 second tour of the vehicle. The one on the Chevy site is the best, but I couldn't figure out how to share it in here.

This YouTube from a Houston Chevy dealer is not bad, though...

I get to spend two sweet weeks with this lover-boy. I'm so glad that it is a bit smaller than my Expedition because if it were any more perfect, I'd be stuck in another car note by the end of this month.

Some of the things I adore about this vehicle just in the 24 hours we've had it (we haven't even taken the trip yet - so I'm sure you'll be hearing more as we go)...

- ONSTAR (We get to leave the TomTom behind! The less stuff for the console the better - my Expedition has a HUGE console and this vehicle's is pretty small... although the glove box is bigger for sure)

- smooth ride (I forgot how much smoother a car/crossover rides than a truck)

- safety (side, front, and head curtain air bags)

- third row seat (although with all our luggage we won't be taking advantage of more than 1/3 of it and we'll have to leave the BIG stroller at home)

- rearview camera system (very handy! mine just has the 'beep-beep-beep' rear sensors and it is finally dying after 7 years)

- power rear lift gate (*SWOON* It opens by itself and closes by itself)

- leather seats (mine has them, too - and they are a necessity with kids!)

- heated and cooled front seats (not sure what to do with myself)

- auto on/off front airbag sensor

- bluetooth for hands-free cell phone talking

- Bose audio system (oh, yeah.)

- USB ports and an actual 115 volt power outlet. Like for your laptop power cord, people. Be still my heart!

- clean and shiny + new car smell (been a long time since my vehicle smelled that good and I'm not sure it was EVER this clean)

- Possibly better gas mileage. I'll be doing a little math on the trip to see how much better it is than my vehicle.

So far the only negative I see is that it is smaller than our SUV as far as packing luggage goes. If you'll remember, I'm a bit of a pack-o-haulic. I'll be squeezing a cooler, box of food, suitcases, bags, electronics, a stroller, pillows, blankets, purses - and possibly the kitchen sink - somewhere in this vehicle in the next few days. We'll be lucky to have all our family members INSIDE the vehicle and not strapped to the roof rails.

For a family with less than 4 kids, this vehicle is a dream come true... especially if they are smart and FLY when they take long, 3550+ mile trips that require insane amounts of food and luggage. I still haven't found my clue... and I'm a tad on the crazy side... so I'm counting on Traverse to teach me to be a LIGHTER packer and a more organized 'fitter-inner'. I'm sure we'll figure out how to get all the stuff we need in there somehow. You watch!

More on the #sweetRIDEChevy to follow. Follow along!

Random Relevant Gratitude

Going... going... going... not quite gone yet - but close!

I've been having a hard time finding time to blog. Well, to blog at THIS blog, that is. Nominations for the Homeschool Blog Awards are beginning this Friday and it is my job as the site's owner and the scheduling manager for the authors to recruit all the prizes for the winners.

Join Me at The Homeschool Post!

I have spent more time on email since August doing that and PR/fundraising for Relevant than I have ever spent on email in my life. It has nearly fried every synapse in my already misfiring brain. When I actually DO leave for Relevant next week... er... this week, really... I might not be able to hold coherent conversation with anyone for quite some time.

Good thing that I don't have to SPEAK at Relevant. Heaven forbid!

I'm so blessed to be able to work with so many really wonderful homeschool vendors and sponsors... and am honored to be able to review cool products and represent homeschoolers and their opinions. Sometimes I scratch my head and wonder why God chose me to have these perks. I mean, are you really reading this blog? Hello out there? I'm just an average scatterbrained, eccentric, quirky homeschool mom... with issues.

Anyway, I'll enjoy the season while it lasts... because after crazy baby #4 arrives on the scene, I'm certain the three brain cells I have left are going to pack their bags and move to a less lonely and deserted place where they can actually work for a living.

Until then...

I want to thank my Relevant sponsors for making this trip possible for me
- for the miles that my family will drive together
- for the memories we will make
- for the friends I'll get to hug...
- and the amazing things I'll be able to learn.

I hope that I can bless the people who shared their money, prayers and encouragement with me in the past few months... and that I can continue to be REAL, and INTENTIONAL in everything I aspire to do - not just blogging.

Most of all, I want to thank God for the miracle of over 2,000$ to get ALL the way to Relevant. I'm only $350 short of my goal at this point and we are forging ahead, trusting that those last few dollars will appear as magically as the Chevy lease and the other funds did.

What an amazing thing that we're REALLY going to Relevant!

To Him be the Glory,

Check my little red car out!!!

How You can Help
