Camera Phone Friday and a Texas Two-Step Tweetup

camfon-collage-july11_sm

I was in such a rush tonight -- and it is so very late -- that I didn't copy the snazzy code that tells the titles of each of these pictures, nor links them up on flickr. However, if you are nosy (like me) and interested in the story behind them - they are each on my flickr account and instagram stream. I'm @sprittibee on both flickr and instagram... pretty much everywhere online. Easy peasy to find me.

Speaking of Instagram... you are using the #incourage hashtag on your fave pictures, right? NO? Check out why you should in my Incourage Collage post.

This week is crazy - trying to cram the last bit of school for 2010-11 down my children's throats... uh, I mean, "finish up school". Organize my desk and dayplanner. Clean up my procrastination piles before @dazeofadventure arrives. #WOOT Oh, and we have family to see and visit with this weekend... including a sad turn of events in which one of my favorite uncles in childhood passed away suddenly (funeral Saturday).

My note to you - go see your relatives that you care about... or you might end up feeling foolish like me... because it may just end up being too late.

[Stepping off of soap box.]

As for the Texas Two-Step Tweetup, @dazeofadventure and I are hoping to plan a little blogger pal fun in to our photography and conference week. She's getting a whirlwind tour of Texas wound up in this one week trip. If you are wondering WHY she's driving all the way from Florida... it is because she and I are taking pictures for THSC's Woodlands Homeschool Conference together. If you'll be at the conference and want to meet up, come find us - we won't be hard to miss... think camera-stuck-to-face.

I thought we might swirl through at least two cities and do a tweet and greet. We will be in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. If you would like to meet up for coffee, let me know. If there is enough interest, we will make a plan of action.

I'll make some sort of dazzling little graphic and get all official if enough twitter, homeschool, facebook, instagram or conference buddies want to meet up.

The dates are:

San Antonio, Monday next week (lunch time or early afternoon)
Austin, Thursday morning early for breakfast (location already determined)
Houston, Thursday or Saturday next week

Keep us in your prayers as we kick up some dusty trails across this Lone Star State.

You're So Vain... You Probably Think This Post is About You, Don't You?

I'm as tired as I look.

V is for Vanity, Vainglory, and Very-very-very Tired. Every now and then, mama takes a picture of herself to document that she exists - since 99.8999 % of the rest of our family photos only include Daddy and the Varmints.

Having pictures of yourself is Valuable - to make sure the kids remember what mama looked like 'back in the day'. Especially if you are an ancient mommy like me... one who will be nearly 60 by the time her last one reaches adulthood. I guess we'll just give the house to the kids and move in to the nursing home then.

Disney World will probably be out of the question. Dramamine is already failing my husband (he chickened out at Six Flags last year and I hadn't even given BIRTH to our youngest kid then).

OK, so maybe V is for Very-very-very OLD.

In my case, V is also for VACATION - of which I haven't had in quite some time. I'll be taking NEXT WEEK (not this week) OFF from homeschooling (at least the academic parts) while I Venture off across Texas with my partner in crime: Jenn Perry. Jenn and I are going to burn up some Texas freeway with my V8.

No, really, I have no idea if it is a V6 or a V8. Ask my husband. It just sounded good in that paragraph. And I'm not sure V6 or V8 matter on a Vehicle with 150,000+ miles on it.

rel109

Austin, Houston, San Antonio -- here we come! A Texan loves the chance to show off her state. "Remember the Alamo!"

Expect the letter W to be exciting; that's all I'm sayin'.

Jenn's already on her way to Texasville! Hope she's bringin' some rain.

Vamoose, woman!

And as our Mexican neighbors down South might say...

Vamanos...

More info about this alphabetical photo meme is below...

Join me at the Homeschool Post for the A B See Meme (an alphabetical photo meme) and a chance to win a prize each month. Almost every week they put FIVE of the best alphabet pictures on their blog each week to showcase them. Once a month, a random winner is selected from the best photos that were showcased. All you do is upload your photos to their Flickr Group. You don't even technically have to be a blogger to play along... you just have to have an alphabetical themed photo and a flickr account! By the way, Flickr is free!

The meme is posted on Saturdays or Sundays each week and you can start on the letter A or get all RANDOM on everyone and do it out of order. Whatever floats your boat.

Here are the links to the past few 'A B See' posts I have done here:
A is for antique.
B is for bugging big-sis.
C is for computer.
D is for digger.
E is for eat... and Elmers.
F is for fried rice.
G is for goofy girl.
H is for Heather.
I is for insect.
J is for joy.
K is for Kreative Spelling and Killer Homeschool Deals.
L is for live music.
M is for matryoshka.
N is for national cemetery.
O is for Orchids and Opryland.
P is for Pregnant.
Q is for quack.
R is for rocks.
S is for street.
T is for Train and Tunnel of Turmoil
U is for unwound.

Tip: Use the dictionary to get ideas if you are stumped on a letter. No excuses! Get to clicking!

You have until each Saturday morning to load your picture on the Flickr group and be considered for the top five that will be displayed next week. Don't forget: A prize goes out each month to one random participant! This month's prize is from MABEL's LABELS! You don't want to miss it!

If I can homeschool, ANYONE can.

Godiva makes the list

It has been a while since I sat down to do a homeschooling post. I'm a homeschool mama first and foremost, but the passion has not been eclipsing the chaos for so. very. long. I'm not sure how long it takes YOU guys to come out of the "baby daze" - but with 3 pregnancies in the past 4 years for me, I've been in survival mode around here. [Yes, we had a miscarriage before the Viking, then my 2 year old, and my 5 month old.] Survival mode is the enemy of homeschool progress the same way my upstairs game-room couch is.

I've been feeling the sparks lately, though! The... er... Ye olde embers of educational ecstasy are returning. And that's a reallly good thing. [I misspelled that on purpose.]

Here are some hints that we are on the right track:

1. We've been doing a lot more than "just the basics" lately. I was telling someone on twitter that I need to change the tagline of this blog to "I suck at homeschooling so you don't have to." And I still might... but at least our determination to stick it out through the tough times promises to allow God the room to wow us with a miracle of success. [And that would be a wow - considering our last couple of years. But I know HE is big enough. Praise be!]

2. I have book cases in my garage. Three of them! This was a blessing inside of a blessing - brought about by my wonderful in-laws that love me and my kids very much. [Wouldn't trade them for the world.] These book cases are going in my dining room - which needed a huge dose of character. There's nothing in there but a table and an ugly light fixture. [And an art easel that is used much less frequently than it should be.] Over the past few months we have painted some coffee and cream colors on the walls and our book cases will be the white 'showcase' of our room - a design delight and a homeschool mom's dream come true. #homeschoolersLOVEbookcases

What do book cases have to do with making us better homeschoolers, you ask? Why, I'd love to tell you...

These book cases promise to do the following:
- give us a place to keep our school work - that has doors to accomodate daddy who hates homeschool mess.
- give me a spot for my cook books - since I have limited cabinet and counter space in the kitchen.
- give me a place to put all the National Geographic mags that have been on my bedroom floor for 4 years.
- give me a buffet spot to place dessert or food when we have company over.
- help us get the books that have no home more room on other book cases in our house - thinning out our space needs.
- make the room look great and the house look more homey and custom designed for our needs.
- give me a spot to showcase favorite things (not just favorite books).
- enable us to do school in the dining room without having to carry heavy loads downstairs from the 'school room'/gameroom.
- keep the kids away from the couch so they can sit at a table and get work done efficiently!
- enable us to all sit together - so mama can spread out and be available to help the kids stay focused.
- hold all our supplies so we won't have to get up and hunt for things all over the house.
- enable us to be downstairs so I don't have to worry about babies tumbling down the staircase.
- allow us to work in a room that doesn't have a TV set - but the half wall will still allow me to see in to the living room where the babies might watch Sesame Street.
- put us closer to the kitchen so we can snack to keep our energy up - and I can cook while still helping the kids stay on task.

Productivity, thou name art "Book Case". I can't wait to get them finished this weekend and loaded next week!

My kids have really missed the rigor of our pre-baby schedule. They have told me so lately... as we have been doing more school. They both have asked me about doing more - which means that all three of us are desiring to return to a more robust routine... and you know how it is pulling teeth, right? I am praying that there won't be any more pulling teeth... because pulling teeth and baby interruptions are two ingredients for failure in homeschooling when they are mixed together. With all of us on the same page and a desire to move forward - thank you Jesus - I think we'll be having a much better school year in 2011-2012. Last year (which we are still finishing), I wondered if it would be our last. It has been heavy on my heart for a long time now... and my prayer journal sounds like a broken record.

"Please God, help us get back in to a better homeschool groove - let all of us be blessed with good health so there are fewer urgent interruptions - please help the children to want to participate and learn - show us how to work around the distractions you place in our life with these sweet babies - help our attitudes to be right - multiply our meager efforts and return our passion - help us to be victorious as we seek to honor you with our children's education and hearts."

Have you ever heard the phrase: P.U.S.H. ? Push means Pray Until Something Happens. It was something I learned about in junior high youth camps as a kid. I guess it was subliminally what I've been doing for the past couple of years with our homeschooling experience. I talked a lot about our major setbacks in my post "Bad Homeschool Year... Blessings".

I know that God sometimes answers prayers instantly - like he did when he healed my daughter's legs/hip/back pain, but sometimes he makes you wait a long while as he molds you on the potter's wheel. I'm feeling a lot smoother these days -- and I'm really glad I allowed him to continue His work by staying on the wheel even when I could see no form taking place.

So here I am this year - lookin' much more like a vessel that can hold water. Waiting to be filled.

#goodSTUFF

Are you just stopping by for the first time at my blog? I've been blogging about homeschooling since 2005. My kids were tiny back then and I have kept a running log of our school years and a lot of great info in my Homeschool Series post. I also have a Big List of Resources and a Nature Journal Resource section. I talk about WHY I HOMESCHOOL and give a little history about myself at my Testimony and my About Page, also. Finally, this list of links would be incomplete unless I led you to the Chick-Fil-A story -- so you could see a little of my adult A.D.D. personality in action.

Trust me - If I can homeschool, anyone can.

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love it if you joined my Google Friends, bookmarked my site, signed up for the site via RSS or email, and left a comment! Homeschool moms need all the virtual friends they can get!

Books For a Homeschool Teacher

Boys and Books

**Update 7/20/11 (Book list has been updated below to exclude the Pearl books. Not going to read them after reading this post by the friend of a child who is now dead because of their methods of child training.)

It's been a long time since I logged in to my blog and just wrote a random post. Lucky you. Today is the day I'm going to do it. [Feel free to clear your throat and politely click away - I won't notice.]

Most of you are enjoying a summer off from homeschooling and are even starting to gear up for "back to school". We've been doing perpetual school - which really translates to "school whenever we can" - for a long, long while. Therefore, I get kind of discouraged at all the "back to school" talk... since our breaks mostly consist of doctor visits, baby or teenage meltdown days, and just life interruptions... and we fit school all around those like a sloppy post-reunion tin-foil potluck dish might be covered in foil. Patch here. Patch there... whatever's left of the day - slap some "school" on it - don't let the time leak out un-used.

Forgive my food analogies. I eat a lot to keep up with the breastfeeding 5 month old... and @AnnVoskamp just mentioned BACON on Twitter. #forshame

And so... I've been trying to figure out a way to not just 'do school' but to thrive in the environment we live in - to capture the JOY of the moment - the JOY in the journey... to be OK with the stage that we are in and to maximize our meager efforts and make the most out of "what we have been given".

Which brings me to my current reading list:

Some of these are re-reads for me... but oh, so worth it. Others are ones given to me by friends, or authors for review. These books cover a broad range of topics I'm always reading about: motherhood, parenting, marraige, homeschooling, learning, organizing, feeding my family, being a Godly example and learning to accept my "station" and this "phase" in life as a blessing - no matter how much chaos comes with today (basically that would mean books on FAITH and Christianity - as it relates to motherhood).

My goal is to get through all of these books by the end of this school year... which would be July 2012 as a closing date... or thereabouts.

And not just those books... because I also have a few other favorites to add to the list - some that Apologia is sending for me to review. [Shhh! Don't tell them that I would have purchased the books anyway.]

I'm hoping to add these books to my "Teacher's Reading List" for this school year, too:

7 Tools for Cultivating Your Child's Potential
SoundBites from Heaven
How to Have a HEART for Your Kids
Six Ways to Keep the "Little" in Your Girl: Guiding Your Daughter from Her Tweens to Her Teens (Secret Keeper Girl)
Read for the Heart: Whole Books for WholeHearted Families
Seasons of a Mother's Heart
The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling
The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling Teens

As you can see I have my free time all slotted with reading - until the cows come home. And that's OK with me. Although it might cut in to my Instagram time.

I'm hoping to get a few book reviews to you later as the school year unfolds. I'm pretty sure that I'll be including some amazing book GIVE - AWAYS as well. You won't want to miss that. I love getting a free book in the mail. I'm sure you do, too.

Now that I have a lot of great books to read, I wish I had groceries. But alas, we're going to have to move the schoolin' to the road today and go snag us a burger before we shop to fill the pantry. Homeschooling requires that you also keep a functional kitchen and household, unfortunately. It really is a busy job being home all day with kids. My husband learned a looong time ago not to EVER ask "So, what did you do today?"

Because ya-know? I just might answer him. #scarythought

[Do you have some great books that aren't listed here? Any thoughts on these? Want to help me sort them by your top 5 so I get to the best ones first? It's so hard! They all look interesting.]
