Texas: Action Needed to Stop Harris County Curfew
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
As announced in our previous e-lert on August 29, 2007, the Harris County Juvenile Curfew Review Committee had a public hearing regarding implementing a daytime curfew. The curfew would be imposed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the school year and would apply to minors under the age of 17.
At this hearing, many people spoke against the curfew. In addition, numerous emails were to the Committee opposing any type of daytime curfew. However, several law enforcement officials strongly supported it.
The Review Committee will be making a recommendation to the Harris County Commissioners. The Commissioners will then vote on this issue on September 11, 2007.
Requested Action:
HSLDA encourages you to contact the Commissioners to express your opposition to the curfew.

That's just ridiculous! I went to college (in Texas, but in the AUstin area) when I was 16.
Would I have had to wait 2 years and sit around the house waiting until I was old enough to go out by myself?!
The government has lost its mind.
First, I like your blog.
Second, I support home schooling. But I don't quite understand why home schoolers would have a stake in this. Would this curfew include children who are at the park WITH their parents? What do you want to see changed in this law?
Homeschooled children that have finished their schoolwork (or not having school day on a particular public school day) may be out playing on their own even during normal school hours.
Besides, it really isn't a proper function of government. It's a proper function of parents to determine when their children can or can not be out and about. The government only gets involved when th child breaks a law (shoplifting, for example) and then their interest should be fairly confined to the law-breaking.
