States and Regions Co-Op Photos

I have a few pictures to share from our American states and regions study with KONOS that we have been doing this summer. I picked a few favorites from the ones we have taken. Too bad I didn't get good shots of all the neat foods we have eaten since we started this journey... Cindy is a n extra REAL good cook. Yeah, I know I'm lucky to be co-oping with another blogger. However, I think both of us wonder if we'll find our mug-shots or quotes floating around on the other one's blog. Cindy wrote a cute essay to that tune which was featured on Maria Schneider's Writer's Digest blog. So not only am I co-oping with a KONOS friend, but she's famous as well!

So here below are the pictures you've been waiting on...



The foam sculpture Statue of Liberty project was a hit. The cats have dismembered our statues and I think Liberty's crown is missing all the spikes but one. It was fun while it lasted. I think originally the objective was to paint them... but they look fine white, too. And now that they are broken and have kitty teeth marks, I doubt we'll be painting. Glad I got the picture, though... so the memory of making them can live on in infamy.



The Native American foods we made were very interesting. You should have seen the butcher at HEB when I asked him if he had some beef fat he wouldn't mind giving me. The lady at the register picked it up and tried to scan it and I told her it was free. She said, "What is it?" Beef fat somehow wasn't answer enough. So I told her we were making Pemmican - a jerky and berry treat that was held together by beef fat. She just nodded her head and said, "Uhu." The Pemmican came out fine... but it was the Maple Sugar Candy that always steals the show. As for Cindy's fare, her wild rice and blueberries were AWESOME. I could actually eat that on a regular basis. Very healthy for you, too... I'm sure! Maybe you can go visit her blog and beg her for the recipe... and be sure to munch down on some corn nuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds while you wait. Amazing how many foods we enjoy because the Native Americans taught us about them. Sweet potatoes, anyone?



And there are Cindy's boys with my two monsters. Learning about all the states in the USA is so much more fun when you do it with buddies.

As I type this, the kids are downstairs playing "This Land is Your Land" on the piano together. Learning about cooperation through our unit study on the states has been fun so far. Hopefully we can get back in to the swing of things and finish it by August. I'd like to have a little time in September to plan out our year for 2008-9 before we start back up in October. We'll be starting next year on the Civil War. Hopefully that isn't an indication that the fighting will continue between my two kids through next school year! Cooperation is definitely what my two munchkins need to be working on lately. God always works out our subjects perfectly. His timing is amazing.
