Guns and America's Future

I got this email (below in blockquotes) today and it concerns me that it has even been discussed in our nation that the government wants to register fire-arms. It is a known fact that registries have been used already to round up fire arms from citizens. The historical facts behind gun control and weapons bans have led to mass exterminations of peoples around the world. Our constitution explicitly made allowances for us to be armed because of the fallibility of mankind and government. Every day you watch the news and it seems like more and more nonsense - science fiction - freakishness. I don't blog about it much because when you are raising children - nurturing and educating them all day - you just CAN'T be bogged down with dreariness and fear. Kids can tell when things aren't 100% with mom. Even babies.

I suggest that it isn't so scary that 1 in every 3 kids in America is scared that the earth won't exist when they grow up (statistics I heard on the radio yesterday for earth day). I know why they are afraid of that; because the media is bombarding them with environmental extremism - global warming alarmism. I am not against being 'green', but when crazy people start calling for a ban on reproductive sex, a tax on my mileage, and the confiscation of all law-abiding citizens' guns... you have to wonder... is America about to collapse? I can't imagine any true American being OK with much of what is coming out of the liberal Congress these days. A lack of resources is certainly not our biggest problem on this continent, for sure!

But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever. - John Adams

Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom. - John Adams

The said constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms. - Samuel Adams

The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed. - Alexander Hamilton

Here's my credo. There are no good guns, There are no bad guns. A gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a good man is no threat to anyone, except bad people. - Charlton Heston

...and now the email...

A Little Gun History

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated
------------------------------

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
---- ------------- -------------

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
-----------------------------

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
------------------------------

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

List of 7 items:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent.

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
-----------------------------------------------------

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND'S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE TO. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!

Sound off! What do you think about gun ownership, gun control, the banning of guns? Do you own a gun? Do you know how to shoot a gun? Are you afraid of an American society where the only people who own guns are the cops/bad guys/military?

I'm not ready to put up a sign in my yard yet that says, "Proudly Unarmed". I figure it would send the wrong message to those who might want to come in and harm us... especially living in a border state where there has been a huge surge in violence over the past decade. Just remembering the Jenny Garcia story makes me shudder.

I heard someone say once, "The reason I carry a gun... is because a police officer is too heavy." Had to laugh at that. I love hearing stories about the good guys outwitting the bad guys. Not long ago I heard about an 11 year girl that shot and killed two illegals in her home who were robbing her family (they were in possession of a stolen weapon). I bet her daddy is thankful that he taught her how to use a gun for self-defense! I would be if she was my daughter.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the issue. So share them with me in the comments below...

I got a Consealed Weapons permit. I have 3 children. If someone comes after me when I'm out and about, I can't run & leave the kids. I would much rather go down fighting. I pray that I never have to use it. But I'm not going to let someone take my children or hurt/kill them. I couldn't live with myself if that happened & knowing that I didn't even try to save them.

We have taught our kids about gun safty. My husband allows them to look at them & hold them -with him. They know that they can look at them anytime with daddy. The curiousity is gone. Therefore, they don't mess with them unattended.

We have guns, everyone that is old enough knows how to shoot them. They are kept locked up in our home, but we have them if we would ever need them. Also my husband and oldest son hunt so gun safety/ hunter safety is very important in our home. My dh would love to get his cc but hasn't had the time to take the course.
I agree with April, my kids are curious because they are around them frequently. They understand they are not toys.
I don't expect everyone to own or want to own firearms, but I think it is important that are rights are not taken away. Obama scares me in regards to gun ownership...he definitely seems to want to do away with the 2nd amendment.

Heather, in my home when we discuss gun control it refers to hitting the target every time. My children know how to shoot and they know about gun safety. They know that they are not allowed to handle guns when their father is not around, with the exception of when they were taking a class at the range on shooting and being taught by certified NRA instructors and with all the proper safety gear.

If it were possible for our ForeFathers to see what was happening to the country that they willfully sacrificed so much for I think they would want to die all over again. I plead with so many to allow our country to become like the countries mentioned in your post here, unless it happens to be Sweden anyway, as I do not want my children and grandchildren to live in such a place.

Even Ghandi said this:

"Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest."

Glad you asked! I have the Right to bear Arms!
I own a gun, KNOW how to use it!

Took MANY MANY MANY hours upon hours of lessons and continue to do so. Practice weekly at the Gun range. I have a GA Firearms license and Carry my gun with me all the time!

I know the Law, and I VERY respectful of it and all the changes that take occur. My girls are 18 and 23, so they are not an issue. My 18 year old knows NOT to touch my gun, but has gone to the range and shot my gun in case an intruder enters our home and she needs to shoot.

I never wanted a gun when my kids were small, I was afraid, but now... I'm ok!

GREAT Topic!

My comment isn't on gun control, it is on stupidity. A 3 year old child found a loaded gun under his parents' bed in the UK on Easter, while looking for eggs. He pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger. It won't matter what the laws are (just as it doesn't matter with drugs, immigration, etc) people will find a way. I just wish everyone would be more responsible and educated if they are going to choose to exercise their rights.

Heather, I wholeheartedly agree! I just recertified for my concealed carry pemit for the 3rd time. I've been licensed for 12 years now and also fear the direction our nation is going. It's tragic when the world views good people as the villians.

I received the below email and link a few days before recertifying this month. Take a few minutes and listen to this powerful testimony form a State Representitive in TX:

This is a must watch video; after watching the video all I can say is: Watch their faces as she speaks. She understands the 2nd Amendment in a way that they never will. Pass this clip to everyone you know. Her last sentence says it all.

I think Switzerland has it completely right. My husband has lots of guns here. They are always locked up. We both took a handgun safety class so we could get concealed weapons permits. We teach our children about gun safety. We are responsible. It's unrealistic to believe that more gun control is going to do any good. All of the LAW abiding citizens will comply. They aren't the biggest issue with gun safety! It's the criminals out there who are buying guns on the black market. The ones who are stealing them & not going through the proper channels. If someone like THAT comes at me, I want to be able to defend myself and my family.

I love reading stats and history. May we learn from it and from the present when others learn the hard way for us.

I know how to use a gun. I've been shooting a few times.

I hate guns and I about had a conniption when I found out that a visiting friend of ours had two on him.

However, that being said, we will have firearms in our home and our children will know how to use them safely and will know how to hit their mark.

As April said, I will go down fighting before someone tries to harm my kids.

I am a SAHM and up until becoming a mom, I was a police officer for the State of Georgia. I own guns and I know how to shoot, maintain and handle them. I am so sick and tired of idiots weeping on TV that "if there hadn't been a gun in the house, my poor little (insert name here) would still be alive." That's a bunch of junk.

There was a body found in Australia with 30 nails shot into the head from a nail gun. You can kill a person fairly easily without using a gun or other recognized weapon.

And as far as kids finding guns and killing or wounding themselves or others....well, we've all heard horror stories about kids playing in old fridges and freezers or drowning in kiddie pools or thinking household cleaners are Kool-Aid. Preventive and observant parenting are the key, no matter what potential dangers exist in your home or neighborhood.

I would much rather parents pay attention to their children and spend time talking to them about safety than have my rights curtailed by a bunch of nanny-state hysterics.

I am with the first commenter (April)...I may go down but I promise you, I will do some damage on my way out!!!

Dear Heather,
Our current President scares me. My mom said, "What does it matter who is President? What can one man do?" I argued with her that it only takes ONE person to take away the rights of many and place them in bondage. All I can say is pray, pray and pray some more for our President and our country. There are no guns in my household, but I enjoy that I do have the right to bear arms as much as anyone else--the right to protect precious life that God deems worthy to be on this planet. I pray that our nation will not be stripped of our unalienable rights that our forefathers and military have so vehemently fought and died for.

Lord God, help our country!!

I believe that we should have the right to bear arms. I am very upset that people who have no idea of history or what this country went through to be the USA are so ready to give it away. :(

Hello, I just found your blog through some mindless internet wandering, and I just had to take a moment to thank you for an excellent post.

My husband and I got our first gun 7 months ago. Unfortunately, I've not been able to practice with it yet, as I've been pregnant the whole time. But I have more previous experience with firearms than he does.

We both feel so strongly that many people--especially those around our age--are needlessly afraid of guns. And at the same time, our friends don't seem to consider the consequences of what a disarmed public would be. The irony is unbelievable....All of our friends are terrified of "gangsters," but somehow think that taking away OUR guns is going to keep them safe from the bad elements of society.

We're planning on taking a gun safty class this summer with our daughters and then giving them some practice shooting. My youngest daughter is excited about it.

A few years ago, I did not want a gun in my house for fear of the safety of my children. The Lord has really softened my heart and opened my eyes. My DH bought a gun and I made him keep in his truck at all times b/c of fear it would accidentally be left unsecured and my son would find it. I am glad to say that we have since talked and the gun comes in the house now and stays secure and out of reach of the children. I am looking to buy my own gun and take a shooting class too. I came to the conclusion of how would I protect my family if someone entered my house? If they had a gun and I didn't, I would be at their mercy.
I am so disheartened by our current administration and the consequences that will follow (and we will all endure) because of their actions. THis is why it is VITALLY important to get the word out now to vote in the mid-terms next year so we can get some conservatives back in to stop this crazy legislation and bring our country back to its roots.

Oh, and when our children are old enough...they will learn gun safety too.

I realize I'm about a week behind in commenting, but I just had to give my 2 cents on this topic. :)

Like many of the other commenters, we have guns and know how to use them. Our children have been taught that should they ever find a gun at the playground, or laying in the yard, or somewhere it shouldn't be - they should "Run away and tell an adult." We practiced this a bunch when they were younger.

Now, we are working on the 4 gun safety rules with our children.
1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle of the gun point at anything you do not intend to kill or destroy.
3. Keep you finger off the trigger. (Hubby taught them "booger-hook" instead of finger. They laugh, but they remember it.)
4. Be sure of your target AND what is behind it.

Our kids know they can look, touch, and examine guns with Daddy anytime - so that takes some of the intrigue and interest away. They always ask "Can you show me that it's not loaded?" before they touch one, and they know where to look to see if it is loaded or unloaded.

And one more thing - my husband has a standing invitation to go to the gun range with any of our friends and neighbors. He will bring any weapon they want to know about, and he'll and teach them proper usage/handling. It has been really cool to see people who were once very timid about guns, learn to handle them and even go so far as to take Hubby with them to purchase their own.

As for me, I'm with Charlton Heston.

Great post, thanks for breaching the subject. :)

I stumbled upon your blog through a friend of a friend's. I just kept reading the great posts. Anyway, I cling TIGHTLY to my guns, all of them. When my children get older they will learn to use them, well. You can never be to safe. I think the statistics from Australia say it all, we would be opening ourselves up to every 'bad' guy out there if we hand over our guns. Although I'm sure we won't all give them up quietly.

FYI - NRA is giving away free 1 year memberships:

https://www.nrahq.org/nrabonus/accept-membership.asp

Maybe all your followers can join and we can be stronger against any anti-gun legislation that could be coming.
